The Bahamas

The Bahamas

Trek has been sending anglers to the Bahamas for many years and knows that each island in the chain holds its own character and expectations. Sure, we can list every lodge in the Bahamas like some of our competitors but what does that prove? Instead we prefer to list those lodges that offer what we feel is fair value and a unique opportunity to take bonefish, permit and tarpon on the flats. Whether it's relatively close like the Abacos and Grand Bahama or a little further to Andros you can be assured of the very best accommodations, guides and equipment.

Abacos

There is just one destination we offer in the Abacos for flats fishing and it's called Abaco Lodge on the Marls. This is a new destination that is scheduled to open its doors in April 2009. Trek is very fortunate to represent this new and exciting lodge that takes advantage of some of the best bonefishing in the Bahamas located in the famous Marls on Abacos westside. This new venture will offer anglers by far the best facility ever designed to fish the flats on Abaco and it is very easy to reach with daily flights from Ft. Lauderdale, Daytona, Miami and Orlando. Single room accommodations and the best facility on the on the island give Abaco Lodge a clear advantage.

Andros

This is our favorite island for sheer numbers of fish and we have selected three locations on what is often referred to as the "Big Yard". Andros is the perfect habitat for thousands of bonefish and this is not anyone's secret anymore, all the more reason you had better be in the right place at the right time.

All lodges Trek represents are located on the eastern side of the island and extending from north to south. In the northern part of the island you have a small jewel at Stafford Creek Lodge. Owned an operated by Prescott Smith (son of "Crazy Charlie" Smith), eight lucky anglers will have as good an experience as possible from northern Andros. Here you will fish from a fleet of Maverick Mirage Skiffs that are powered with enough horses to get you north to the Joulter Cays, west to Red Bay, and south to the Middle Prescott Smith Guidesand South Bights as well as many small creeks and lagoons in between. This is no easy task and SCL is one of the very few who can offer this trip that will put you in some of the best skinny waters from bones, tarpon and permit in the Bahamas. The lodge is pure heaven and built with the bonefish angler in mind with plenty of room to stow your fly gear. Local hand made pine furniture that is a work of art, adorns the lodge and the view from Stafford Creek is wonderful. Food is local seafood, salads and meats and the staff at Stafford is excellent with sister Stacy Smith offering her services as well. This is a great family run business from the beginning to end.

Just south of Kemp's Bay in southern Andros is a jewel called Bair's Lodge. Named after its previous owners, Andy and Stanley Bair, this is the ultimate small, high quality lodge offering the best in cuisine, service and premier fishing grounds. Its new proprietors are, Fernando and Jorge de las Carreras who have formed a small company that know a few things about how to run a first class facility. Some of their other properties are; Kau Tapen for sea run brown trout and Pira Lodge for golden dorado in Argentina. Bair's is located on the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic adjacent to Little Creek near the South Bight of Andros. Bair's offers 12 anglers the best opportunity to fish for bones from the fertile fishing grounds of South Andros. The fast moving Dolphin bonefish skiffs are handled by the best guides in the area and is one of the main reasons why Trek highly endorses Bair's. You'll fish Little Creek, Deep Creek as well as the Grassy and Curly Cays. There are six nice rooms with A/C and private baths and the lodge is well located right on the beach. Bair's lodge is well set up for the fly anglers in mind with tying benches and assorted fly materials for those interested in creating the perfect morsel for bonefish. We must stress that if you intend to book Bair's for the spring months, you need at least a year to get it done. To access Bair's you'll need to charter or fly commercially to Congo Town in South Andros. Call our professional travel agency today to arrange your schedule.

Crooked Island

Further down in the Bahamas chain, Crooked Island has always been a refuge of sorts for boats headed north or south through the Crooked Island Passage. Christopher Columbus used this passage during his journeys to the New World and today it offers anchorage and fuel for recreational vessels on their own voyages. Perched atop the Nice Crooked Flathills on the northern tip of Crooked is a small lodge called Pittstown Point Landings, from here you can see the beautiful Bird Rock Lighthouse that was built in 1876 and still stands as a beacon to protect ships from the jagged reefs that abound in the Atlantic. But what brings our attention to Crooked is the bonefish flats that abound in the Bight of Acklin's. This is a huge stretch of flats between Crooked and Acklin Islands that are basically endless and perfect to wade. Pittstown has five excellent guides all under the tutelage of expert master angler, Elton "Shakey" McKinney. Each of them own and maintain their flats boats that may be the best fleet in all the islands. These boats are fast and extremely efficient. Not only are Crooked and Acklin's excellent for bonefishing, but also there are tarpon and permit that cruise the flats and canals around French Wells and surrounding keys. And if you wish to mix a day or so of offshore action, the deeper waters around Crooked are some of the best in the world for giant wahoo as well as tuna, dolphin and mackerel. Pittstown accommodates 12 guests in air-conditioned comfort and has a very nice bar and lounge where talking about the day's catch is a local ritual. To get to Crooked you need to fly commercially to Colonel Hill or arrange a charter straight to Pittstown on their 2070-foot runway. Either way, Trek can help you arrange a four or seven day trip for some real bonefish action on Crooked Island.

Grand Bahama Island

Poolside NRPCThose of you looking for a quick and easy getaway to the Bahamas for great flats fishing have found it here at North Riding Point Club. Being one of the more developed islands in Bahamas, there have been some challenges to maintain their habitat for anglers. North Riding Point has met this challenge with the only concession to fish the highly productive flats on the less developed north side of the island. NRPC is situated on six private acres in Burnside Cove and fronting a three-mile stretch of beach that can only be described as beautiful. There are two separate cabins that have two rooms in each and a fifth room in the main lodge, each room is wonderfully decorated and a have a nice view of the Atlantic. There is also a Founder's cabin for a party of four that is an ideal set up for small intact groups. The fishing is done from 16-foot super skiffs with 70 horse motors and captained by professionally trained guides. The huge expanse of flats on the north shore hold large concentrations of gray ghosts and some real big ones too! You will also access some tested flats on the south shore where bones have known to cruise. Getting to NPRC is easy with daily flights to Freeport from many regional airports and then driving 30 minutes to the lodge. You'll find the service, cuisine and organization to be one of the best experiences in the Bahamas.
