Uruguay

Uruguay

This South American country is about the size of Pennsylvania and a population of just over 3.5 million. You’ll not find a more stable and safe country in the Americas than Uruguay. It also has some great wingshooting opportunities to include dove, ducks, pigeons and Perdiz. Uruguay offers similar hunting options also presented by big brother Argentina but generally at a lesser cost. Uruguay is a very unique destination due to the fact that our three lodges are within a few hours of each other. It is possible to hunt the best lodges for each of the different species in a short amount of time. Our five lodges located throughout Uruguay are: Ninette, a beautiful lodge located on a bluff over looking the Rio Negro, Artigas, an incredible mix bag location plus world-class Dorado fishery, Santa Elena, a true Uruguayan Estancia which was built over 100 years ago as a working cattle ranch, Fortin de San Miguel, a richly decorated castle in the heart of the best duck hunting in Uruguay and finally, Casa La Tany, a beautiful five bedroom home located in Punta Del Este that is located as close to world class pigeon hunting as it is the Uruguayan Riviera.

Santa Elena is located some 90 miles north from the capitol city of Montevideo. Our outfitter is Eduardo Gonzales and his lodge Santa Elena, is about as deluxe as you will find for a bird hunt. Here you’ll venture out each day to the huge tracts of sorghum and sunflower fields where thousands and thousands of dove come to feed. Just like Argentina, the eared dove flies here all day every day and the hunt is as well organized as any you’ll find. Hunters not only enjoy the great shooting, but also the outdoor barbecues (Asado) right in the fields. Santa Elena is a newly refurbished estancia that will accommodate sixteen hunters in single rooms. The lodge features all the great amenities you expect from a first class hunting operation and at a bargain price for a four day hunt. The season for dove is year round and Trek offers a package hunt with airfare on American Airlines.

If a mixed bag hunt is more to your liking, Uruguay is the perfect location as travel between hunting areas is easy and comfortable. Near the town of Mercedes is a new lodge called Ninette, where starting in the spring, one can shoot high volume dove right on the Estancia's property. Hector's lodge is a perfect place for small groups under 12 hunters and you'll be hard pressed to find a better wingshooting operation in South America. In addition to the dove, the elusive and popular Perdiz is in season from May-August and Sarasola's kennel of Brittany Spaniels is expertly trained for the task. Many hunters have returned year after year to have the chance of hunting with Hector and his Brittany's. Ninette accommodates 8 guests in single rooms and overlooks the Rio Negro that also offers fishing opportunities for the beautiful Dorado (golden bass) especially in August. Ninette is the finest privately owned, full hunting lodge in the heart of Uruguay's agricultural belt. Trek has arranged many all-inclusive packages to Uruguay and can customize your trip upon request.

Also, for the mixed bag gunner, we offer a first class duck and Perdiz combination at a classical hunting post called El Fortin de San Miguel. This small resort is located on the border with Brazil near the town of Chuy, and gets its namesake and architecture from an actual fort just minutes away that guards the border of Brazil and Uruguay. El Fortin is perched on a hillside with an incredible view of the rolling hills and marshes that are home to many thousands of ducks. The lodge will offer large spacious rooms for the traveling hunter and features a huge dining room and lounge complete with fireplaces and walls that are adorned with tapestries and mounts from a time long ago. Excellent local dishes are served from the kitchen's wood-fired stove and complimented with the El Fortin's extensive wine cellar. But it is the hunting that attracts our interest and outfitter Eduardo Gonzalez is more than up to the task with his knowledge of the local marshes and lagoons that are home to many species of ducks including, rosey-billed pochards, teal, pintails and widgeons. You will also be treated to afternoons of upland gaming for Perdiz over Gonzalez's impressive kennel of Britanny Spaniels. To hunt at El Fortin Trek will arrange your trip to Montevideo and then take the three-hour drive by highway or arrange a charter flight right into Chuy. The package is usually a five-day hunt and the season is from May-September.

The hottest Lodge in Uruguay is Casa La Tany. With views of the Atlantic Ocean off the deck of the two story, five bedroom home or set in a blind as a group of Pigeons come into the decoys, this lodge is sure to pamper and excite even the most traveled wingshooter.  Eduardo Gonzalez filled the need for a new, exclusive, and unique Pigeon destination in South America when Casa La Tany was bulit.  This stunning home is only and hour and a half from Montevideo and less than 30 minutes from the beautiful beaches of Punta Del Este.  It is hunting lodge meets the Four Seasons. Solid stone construction and dark hardwood accents give this luxury home a lodge feel and as you walk out on the deck overlooking the ocean there is an infinity pool to greet you after a long day in the field.
