Tucuman
Located some 800 miles northeast from the capitol city of Buenos Aires is the province of San Miguel de Tucuman. Its provincial seat is the city of Tucuman itself and is full of local history and a culture that prides itself on its democratic progression. The population is a melting pot of Quilmes Indian, Spaniards and other local natives and they are all eager for visitors from foreign lands.
The Hunting: Sitting along the eastern slope of the Santa Maria Range, the city of Tucuman is known as the “Garden of Argentina”. Surrounded by mountains and nestled in a valley, the area has a wide range of climate that is perfect for many varieties of agriculture. It is here that crops of sorghum, soybean, and corn are grown and harvested. This is also the time during the months of April -September that millions of eared dove migrate into the province. This eared dove is distinguished by its many similarities to the sporty mourning dove found in the U.S. and is very popular among foreign hunters. Outfitter Gustavo Olsen knows this region very well and it is safe to say that you’ll see more dove in one hour than you will have seen in your life. The drives to the fields take little more than 30-minutes to an hour. Pass shooting over fields and water holes as well as roost areas are the norm. And if it is pigeons you are after, Gustavo can arrange a trip three hours south in the Santiago el Estero Province for a high volume hunt involving the Picazuro and Grey Spotted variety. You will stay in a nice in with local flavor or, if you wish, he can arrange a private charter each day in a Cessna Caravan and back to your digs at Rodeo de Los Bueyes.
The Lodge: The Rodeo de los Bueyes Lodge is located just 45 minutes from downtown Tucuman in a rural setting and surrounded by mountains up to 13, 000 feet. The Lodge can accommodate 12 shooters, six double rooms and features a heated swimming pool, gun room, lounge and dining room. The cuisine is typical Argentine, meaning you will never have a bad meal and it goes down easy with fine wines from Argentina and Chile. Few outfitters can claim the sort of "hands on" service and hospitality provded by Olsen.
The Trip: Each trip is for seven days and six nights with three full and one half days of shooting. This trip starts in Miami with an overnight flight, arriving in Buenos Aires the next morning. A Trek rep will assist you with customs and then transfer you to the domestic airport for your flight to Tucuman. Gustavo Olsen will meet you and drive you to the Rodeo de los Bueyes Lodge, where you will have an afternoon hunt. Your next three days are full hunting days. The last day you will shoot in the morning only, and then return to Tucuman for your flight to Buenos Aires, arriving in time to connect with your flight home.
