San Huberto Lodge

There are few places in the world as naturally beautiful as the Patagonia Region of Argentina. It is here in the foothills of the Andes where one can hunt the fabled Red Stag on 25,000 acres of heaven. Estancia San Huberto is world famous for hosting many anglers on their productive trout waters, but for the last 20 years they have cultivated a very healthy herd of Stag and offer only six tags a year. The Trip: Getting to San Huberto requires a flight into Buenos Aires and then a connecting flight to San Martin de los Andes where you transfer 45 minutes to the lodge. In some cases you may need to fly into Bariloche where it is a scenic three hour drive to San Huberto. Trek has some exclusive rates with American, Delta and Lan Airlines.

 The Hunting: The hunting as mentioned above takes place on 25,000 acres on the estancia and your hunt will consist of six days on a one to one basis with your expert guide. The Stag here average some 290-300 points (SCI) and have been taken as high as 330 points. The terrain is rolling hills and small scrub but the views are spectacular with the Andes and Lanin Volcano looming in the background. Your host for this trip will be owner and manager Ronnie Olsen. Although the Red Stag was introduced in Patagonia from Europe in the 1930’s, they have taken very well to the local environment. The hunt takes place during their “rutting or roaring” season when these beautiful animals are on full display.
During your six days, you may have the opportunity to fish the famous Malleo River that meanders its way through the San Huberto property. Rainbow and brown trout flourish here and offers fly anglers a rare chance to fish private trout waters accessible to only 12 guests a week.

The Accommodations: This two story estancia is located in the shadows of the Lanin Volcano and near the town of Junin de los Andes. Its 25,000 acres are owned by Carlos and Carmen Olsen and has been in their family since before the 20th century. Also during stay, expect to be pampered and treated to some of the best cuisine and service found anywhere in the world.
