Deborah Wallace with lunker largemouth bass in MexicoLake El Salto: At full pool, this magnificent lake covers nearly 24,000 acres. Formed by the damming of the Elota River, El Salto was stocked with Florida strained largemouth bass in the mid 1980’s and boy have they prospered. The stocking of shad and tilapia in subsequent years ensured healthy growth of the bass and is one reason that thousands of double digit bass have been caught here over the years and the lake record is over 18 pounds ! No doubt, there are some monsters and potential world records to be found in these waters, why not on your line ?
The Fishing: You will be fishing from fiberglass boats in the 18-21ft range with 65hp outboards and trolling motors. Your local guide will have tons of experience and will certainly put you in the fish. Although largemouth bass will hit most anything from a popper to spinners, plastic worms have normally been the favorite bait for the big ones. Flipping to structure along the shorelines or casting to drop offs have normally been productive. Since El Salto abounds in almost every kind of structure you can imagine from point and flats to rock covered ridges and humps, the opportunities are endless. The story goes that some of the largest bass actually make their home in a few of the old villages that were flooded when the lake was formed years ago.
The Trip: Getting to Lake El Salto is easy as numerous airlines service the nearby town of Mazatlan on a regular basis, Largemouth bass fishing lodge on Lake El Salto, Mexicoour travel agency will be happy to assist you in making your flight arrangements. You will be met in Mazatlan and be transferred ninety minutes north to either the Lake El Salto Lodge or Anglers Inn Lodge. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with a welcoming Margarita and a hearty “mi casa es su casa” by lodge owner Billy Chapman or by his son Billy Jr. if staying at the Anglers Inn Lodge. Billy Sr. is the pioneer of lodge operators in Mexico, opening his first one nearly 50 years ago and believe me, these guys have it down to a science.
