Belize

This Central American country, formerly known as British Honduras, offers several fishing venues popular with Trek anglers. The variety of species here has made Belize a must for the avid saltwater angler. Check out these Trek favorites.

Ambergris Caye
Just a short flight from Belize City is Ambergris Caye. This island has a unique Caribbean feel and is home to Banyan Bay and El Pescador, the two best lodges on the island. Ambergris has numerous flats holding schooling bonefish on a year round basis. With the barrier reef just half a mile off the coast, you can count on hooking up with snapper, grouper as well as other reef dwellers. The spring and summer months offer the best shots at tarpon on the flats. Nothing is as exciting as being able to sight cast to these silver kings cruising the gin clear water around Ambergris.

Turneffe Flats

Thirty miles off the Belizean coast is Turneffe Atoll, the largest of only four coral reefs in the Western Hemisphere. These waters hold great numbers of bonefish, most in the  3-6 pound range, while the permit found here can top the scales at over 30 pounds. As on Ambergris Caye, the best tarpon fishing tends to be in the spring and summer months with some of these monster fish coming in at up to 150 pounds.
