Crooked Island
As in many places in the Out Islands of the Bahamas, Crooked was once a thriving foothold of British Loyalists looking to stay away from the American Revolution. Using the existing slave trade, they planted and sold cotton until the land was unable to produce good crops. During its peak there were once 6000 inhabitants on Crooked. Today there still remains some of the relics of those times including one of the oldest churches in the Bahamas. But now with only 550 residents, Crooked is once again hooked to the outside world but in an industry they never knew would come. Fishing, diving and vacationing is now the keywords among the community. At 20 miles long and barely seven miles wide, Crooked is a beautiful island in the lower chain with classic white sand beaches and swaying palms. But what is most important, they also have that look of a fishing paradise waiting to explode. There are miles and miles of flats and pods of hungry bones and very few lodges. Get the picture now?
The fishing on Crooked was originally explored by a handful of anglers who wanted nothing more than to keep it a secret. This is hard to do in today’s technological world. A group of pilots got together and decided they liked the place so much they built an airstrip and a small facility called Pittstown Point Landing now owned by former race car drove/owner DK Ulrich. With Pittstown in place, the word spread that Crooked was indeed a top notch flats fishing destination. The guides are all local to the area and headed up by Skakey McKinney who is an accomplished champion flats angler himself. Your guides will have the best flats equipment available and head out to the less side of Crooked where there are miles and miles of wading flats and creeks to include the adjacent Acklin Island as well. Offshore opportunities include wahoo, tuna, and marlin. To reach Crooked Island you will need a commercial flight to Colonel Hill on Bahamasair from Nassau or a private charter flight to the 2000 foot runway at Pittstown Point.
Your lodgings will be simple but nicely decored bungalows with the most stunning views in all of the Bahamas. The food is tremendous and Pittstown has the best stocked bar on Crooked. Trek likes this place especially in February and March when it is still too cool to fish the northern chain.
