Abaco Lodge on the Marls
Starting May 1st of 2009, the new Abaco Lodge on the Marls opened its door as the finest bonefish facility on the island of Abaco in the Bahamas, easily accessing over 400 square miles of gray ghost heaven. The Marls are a virtual labyrinth of belt high mangrove creeks, canals and small lagoons that make up much of Abaco Bay on the western shore. Any angler worth his salt knows that mangroves are vitally important for light tackle species like snook, small tarpon and bonefish as they provide cover, food and a home. No place we know holds more 2-5 pound than the Marls and even if you have never casted to a bonefish, you will get lucky here.
Fishing the Marls is not a new venture; in fact Trek has sent many clients there from various lodges in the Abacos and from different points of the compass, but never from the northwest side of the island where Abaco Lodge is located just off the highway between Marsh Harbour and Treasure Cay. The consortium that owns Abaco Lodge are extremely knowledgeable about salt water fly angling and not only will target the Marls, but also the outer cays on both the ocean and bayside. Places like the Bight of Robinson, Cherokee Sound, Snake Cay, and Mores Island are all well known on the flats circuit and can be reached from Abaco Lodge. There are some giant fish in these areas but they are smart and require some skill as opposed to the Marls.
Abaco Lodge will accommodate eight anglers in single room air conditioned suites and features amenities like a swimming pool , well stocked bar, dining room, and an outside fire pit where lies and semi-truths are heard each evening as the sun sets on your day. Abaco Lodge will be without doubt the most comprehensive flats fishing facility on the island. And if you prefer some offshore angling that can be excellent at times as well and Trek knows the best boats available for sailfish, marlin, dolphin and tuna.
Marsh Harbour or Treasure Cay are easily reached by commercial and charter aircraft from Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach or Miami and via Nassau from most major airports. Trek will be glad to arrange your air into either town. The season for fishing here can be year round but the peak is March-June and October-December. Call now to be one of the first to visit this exciting new destination.
