Hey Kevin-
We enjoyed the trip very much. The fishing was great and the eight of us caught over 500 fish. I think about 28 of those were over 10 pounds. Our biggest fish were 2 -19 pounders and then we had several 18 – 18 ½ ‘s. They are beautiful fish and were a lot of fun to catch. Several of us also fished for piranha which was very fun as well.
The camp was great and the camp host, Jerry, did a great job. Please pass that on to the River Plate people. He was very accommodating. The food and the crew were just wonderful. The cabins were very comfortable and we were all glad that they were air conditioned!!
Of our four guides, we all agreed that we had two excellent ones – Izaias and Deco and one good one, Brahma. The fourth guide, Piu Piu was ok and started each day out good but at times seemed to get bored or tired. We switched around so several of us had experiences with more than one guide. All in all though, they did put us on some fish which was their job!
The hotel in Manaus was fine and it was interesting to meet other fishing folks in the bar to share stories with.
We have no complaints-it was a great trip!
Thanks for your help and we will forward pictures to you.

Guatemala Sailfishing [top]
|

Hi Kevin,
The Lodge and food were great and the service and care taken of us was excellent. The fishing was a little slow by Guatemala standards but the four of us each got one or two a day and are happy….The captains and crew were experienced and worked hard…. The fish we did catch were magnificent fighters and made the trip one I will not forget. Gary Wolf

Milton,
My recent bone fishing trip to Bair’s Lodge was fantastic. We had two good weather days but got blown out on the third. The Lodge has expanded since our last trip, with attention to the smallest of details evident everywhere. It is absolutely beautiful !!
The managers are great people and were totally accommodating.
Our entire group was blown away by the whole experience, from the accommodations to the location, to the fishing. We all plan to return in the future.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys bone fishing.
I can assure you that if my finances allow it, I would be booking a visit to Bair’s Lodge with you several times a year.
Thank you for a fantastic trip.

Lupita and Melina.
It was a great trip and I have now caught a sailfish. Not everybody can say that. Charlie, Christian and Phil were great. They know what they are doing and made the trip very enjoyable.
I sure missed my 2:00 pm pineapple yesterday.
Thanks again for a wonderful trip.

Nicaragua Ducks [top]
|
|
Dear Milton,
I wanted to give you a report on our recent Duck/Dove hunt in Nicaragua. In a word it as FANTASTIC!!!
The trip could not have been more pleasant. Everything about this trip was well coordinated from start to finish. Nacho, the hunting coordinator for the Townsend's did a spectacular job. As stated in your intinerary, the Villas Cortijo was above standards even for Nicaragua and the meals were delicious.
The hunting was better than you had suggested to me before we departed. We all limited out on the 25 ducks each for the three days and averaged 50 Whitewings per hunt. My son and I, along with our guests had a great trip and we will be signing up for next year!!
Yours very sincerely, Scott C. Miller

Thank you so much for our wonderful adventure sail fishing in Costa Rica. Lupita was very helpful and did a wonderful job in putting this together and Milena was so accommodating in making sure that every thing went as planned. We were impressed with the hospitality of all the people at Flamingo Bay Fishing Charters.
Every thing from the food to the accommodations were excellent.
Hola to our new amigos Christian Charlie and Peo (phil). They are first rate people and great fisherman.
We caught 5 sailfish and had 3 hook-ups that we missed. Lewis caught 2 maui-maui and 1 jack crevalle as did I.
We had made catching a sailfish on our Bucket List now we have added catching a sailfish with Flamingo Bay Pacific Charters back on the list again. Thanks for a great time and making two old gringos grin.

Amazon Peacock Bass Floating Cabins [top]

Hi Kevin,
They are all back and exhausted! They had a great time though and we’ve got the Monsanto folks in St. Louis for a meeting today. Mike told me that he caught several really nice and big peacock bass, but his largest was a 22 lb, so the record on the Peacock bass wasn’t our guys. From what I understand, he caught the biggest fish of the group. That butterfly peacock below is really cool looking.
Thanks for setting everything up for this trip. They said that everything went off perfect . . . I was a little nervous about the return flights, but they said it worked out great.
Thanks so much for everything!

Cabo San Lucas [top]
|
|
Kevin..... All together I think the count is 16 Striped Marlin, 1 Sail Fish and 4 Dorado.
Cabo San Lucas....It was 3 days of spectacular acrobatic Marlin and Sail fish jumping and tail dancing......150+ lb Striped Marlin hook ups on only 20 lb test.....Dorado or Mahi-mahi (in Hawaiian) the size of Atlantic sailfish every night for dinner....Captains and Mates that untangle crisscrossed lines by passing the the rod from boat to boat while hooked up to a 150+ lb Marlins.....Catching a Marlin out of a circular sardine ball during a feeding frenzy.....hooking a Marlin with the 12 lb bait rig, fighting it for 2 hours, bringing it to the boat twice for a potential record....watching a split tail Swallows swoop down to catch mackerel only to have it taken from him in mid air by another.... and all this going on in the Golden Gate Canyon surrounded by Whales, Porpoise, Seals and a fleet of other awestruck anglers.
All The Best,
Ken

From my perspective, we had great fishing conditions. The hosteria is of course top notch - that hasn't changed. The highlight was fishing with Marcelo Morales. That is the best guide I've ever worked with. His experience on the Collon Cura and Malleo stretches back 30 years. That can't be beat.
Thanks for your help in arranging this trip. I had a great time and I'm pretty sure Joe would concur!

Kevin,
I agree with Greg. The trip was fantastic. The fishing, lodging, and especially the guiding was just great. The Asado on Sunday night at San Huberto was a wonderful event. I would encourage your guests to try to spend a Sunday night at San Huberto just so they can enjoy that experience of the Asado.
The lake fishing at Lago Tromen totally exceeded my expectations. Hunting fish and sight casting to them was a blast.

Hi Kevin,
The trip was excellent! The charter captain and mates were top class professionals! We caught 7 Sails (6 the first day), 1 Black Marlin and a Dorado. Very good considering everyone in town was complaining about the fishing being slow the last couple of weeks. Erika did a fantastic job getting us situated and pointed us in the right direction when asked.
We are already discussing the next trip down there.
Thanks for your help,
Brian

Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed the trip to Nicaragua to hunt ducks and doves. Richard, Nacho and Jorge were the perfect hosts. Hunting ducks near the Cristobal volcano was exciting and beautiful, not to mention seeing the sky full of ducks.
The rooms food and transportation were great, It was a trip we will always remember and hopefully, return in the future for another great adventure with Trek.

Uruguay Dove Hunts [top]
|
|
Chris, I wanted to thank you for a great trip. Everything went as planned- not a single hitch. The hunting was great- a couple of the sessions were as good or better than any I’ve had in Cordoba.
Hector and all were very accommodating, and the lodge was much better than expected- a beautiful setting, too. Please pass on my satisfaction and praise of their operation.
Our group became great friends, in fact we all would like to do the same package on the same Memorial day weekend next year. Keep me informed of any specials or offers that may apply to the Ninette lodge.
Again, I appreciate your recommendation to try Uruguay.
Regards

Las Palomas Lodge Bolivia [top]
|
|
Dear Ron:
Earlier this month we returned to Bolivia to stay at "Las Palomas Lodge", near Santa Cruz, to shoot doves. We were there from June 11 till the 17th. Four "couples" went this time from California and though the other three wives were non-shooters they had a very good time and I believe they all will return next year. They returned to the US and Harry and I stayed over and flew to Cochabamba for a couple of days as tourists. Interesting.
As always, the hospitality at the Lodge under the auspices of Mr. Jorge Molina and his wife Karen, was excellent - fine accommodation, wonderful food and ambience. The pretty young ladies in the kitchen and elsewhere are capable and very helpful. We are always impressed at how they turn out each day in different crisp beautiful style Bolivian dresses.
Each hunt is well arranged by Mr. Molina and his staff. Transportation is on time and there are millions of birds!
On arrival at Santa Cruz we are met at the airport by Mr. Molina's staff, helped through officialdom and then transported and checked into our hotel in town. They make it all so easy for us. Next day we take a short flight to the lodge and the fun begins.
To top it all off and to capture the fun, we were given videos of all of the action.
We wanted you to know what a great time we had.

Trek did an excellent job in arranging our trip. We did not fly your schedule due to an extended trip in C.A., including two weeks with friends in Nicaragua. Our booking to Silver King Lodge was canceled (with our agreement) because there were no other guests. We switched to Rio Parismina Lodge, and were very impressed with the lodge, equipment and staff. Trek also went out of their way to make reservations for an additional night in San Jose and even booked us on a bus to the Nicaraguan border where we met our friends. All in all, it was a wonderful trip, and we are looking forward to booking additional trips with Trek Safaris. I'm especially interested in putting together a group of 8 or 10 for a combo trip of dove hunting and peacock bass fishing.

Smallmouth bass on the John Day River in Oregon [top]
|
|
Smallies for Big fun
As some of you know I have set a goal to catch a fish on my fly-rod in every state of Union, or die trying. For Oregon I wanted to fly-fish for smallmouth bass (smb) on the John Day River. I had read several articles about the smb experience and wanted to partake in it. There was just one problem. To really immerse myself in this endeavor required camping. I don’t like camping. In fact my definition of roughing it is bad room service. I was faced with this very perplexing situation until I received my 2009 Trek International Safaris travel catalog. Trek is a travel company dedicated to sending fishermen and hunters to destinations all over the world. Trek’s website is www.treksafaris.com, and is well worth a look if you are considering a hunting or fishing trip to places you don’t know anything about.
Trek was offering a trip to the John Day River for smb fishing. I couldn’t resist; I had to find out abut this trip. Once I explained my aversion to “roughing it” to the folks at Trek I was assured the outfitter they booked trips for was made-to-order for me. They were right. Trek advised me to check out the outfitter, which I did. It turned out the outfitter, Arrowhead River Adventures, has been in business a long time and truly understands that just because you’re camping doesn’t mean you have to rough it. The outfitter’s website is www.arrowheadadventures, and, like Trek’s, deserves your attention, especially if you are seeking a luxurious camping experience.
Our tents, which you could stand up in, were set up and taken down by the Arrowhead staff. Our cots were assembled, and our packs placed beside them for our convenience. There was no sleeping on the ground for this old man.
Each meal was expertly prepared for us. The menus included chicken marsala, french toast with strawberry compote, apple pie, and their version of surf and turf. Bear in mind, this old fly fisherman’s idea of surf and turf conjures up memories of canned tuna fish topped with a meat sauce. Arrowhead’s definition is steak grilled to perfection, with a side dish of freshly caught and deep fried smb.
My best friend and fishing partner, aka my wife, agreed to go on this fly-fishing venture with me, and she loved the whole experience. She also agreed with me that the fly-fishing was unbelievable. We took 5 and 6 weight fly rods and found them to be perfect. The reels were loaded with weight forward floating lines, as we used poppers almost exclusively. Green seemed to be the best color, but the smb’s didn’t mind red or black. I also found they would take large mayflies and elk hair caddis. When, for a short period a streamer had to be used, a clouser worked best. The leaders we used were seven and half feet 3X. No other tippet was necessary.
This configuration caught smb’s from 2 to 17 inches, from ounces to pounds. It also revealed the one misleading statement the outfitter made to us. We were assured a 50 fish day was possible. The actual count was more like 75, for each of us. My arm and shoulder got so tired and sore I was wishing for a bottle Absorbin Jr. What a great way to hurt.
So, if you like creature comforts, great food, a professional staff, and lots of smb, you should go. If on the other hand you like your naps at home, and pain from mowing the yard, by all means stay home and leave the smb to us outdoors people.
